AFA vs. Notre Dame, Game Program 1973

The season finale against Notre Dame was played in South Bend, IN, on Thanksgiving Day and was broadcast nationally by ABC-TV. Keith Jackson called the play-by-play. During my sophomore season on the football season, we played the University of Arizona in Tucson. My uncle and his family lived there at the time and I left tickets for them. They waited for me after the game and I went to dinner with them.

Penn St. under Joe Paterno came to Colorado for Homecoming 1973. The Nittany Lions brought the eventual Heisman Trophy running back, John Cappelletti, and beat the Falcons 19-9. Download the entire program (13 mb).

Release of the POWs

Contributed by Steve Stockdale, CS-39. My mother clipped this out of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in February 1973. It shows the release of Maj. James R. Berger of Mansfield, Ohio, who is welcomed by Lt. Col. Richard Abel. More on Col. Abel and his family.

Completion of Basic Cadet Training

This is the blurb the Academy sent to local newspapers. Note that it refers to “more than 1,300 freshmen.” We started with 1,505 according to the Superintendent’s Letter to Parents on 25 July. I wonder if this means there were almost 200 who didn’t complete BCT.
